A Beacon’s Reflection | Katie Mileusnich ’26

Being born and raised in Valparaiso, Indiana, I can’t say I was initially excited to attend Valparaiso University. I love traveling and exploring new places, so the thought of going to college in the town I grew up in seemed, well… underwhelming. Now, as a current junior looking back, I had no idea how much opportunity the university would provide me and the amazing memories I would create.

My name is Katie Mileusnich. I am an elementary education major with a special education minor, expected to graduate in May of 2026. Though I did not find my calling in Christ College nor participate in sports, I found my home in the classroom. Valparaiso University’s education program is truly like no other. My professors are experts in their field, always extremely passionate and eager to help in any way they can. I have been able to build close relationships with each of my professors and find comfort knowing that I can go to them for guidance and support. Their mentorship has challenged me academically, pushed me to think more critically and creatively, and encouraged me to explore new perspectives. I will forever be grateful for the knowledge I have gained and the thorough preparation this program has provided for my future. I look forward to my teaching journey as I further immerse myself in the classroom and student-teach next spring.

Outside of the classroom and academics, I serve on the University’s Student Conduct Board. As a member of the board since freshman year, I have had the opportunity to adjudicate alleged policy violations made by my peers and allocate appropriate sanctions. This role has helped me develop strong ethical decision-making skills, as well as a deep understanding of leadership and accountability. It has also allowed me to meet new people and provided invaluable opportunities for growth. My board advisor, Noelle Pease [M.S.], has been an amazing mentor. As the assistant dean of students (among many other roles on campus), she manages a demanding position while consistently prioritizing the needs of students. Her passion, dedication, and work ethic are truly admirable. I am deeply grateful for her guidance and support throughout my time here at Valpo.

The most life-changing experience, however, has been the amazing opportunity to become a Student Support Assistant this year. This is a new position on campus designed to serve as a bridge for resources for freshman students and provide support during the difficult transition to college life. Living just a 20-minute drive from Valparaiso University, I never thought I would have the opportunity to stay on campus. Doing so in this position has completely transformed my college experience. It has allowed me to fully immerse myself in campus life – from forming new relationships to late-night study sessions in the library, it has truly benefited me in more ways than I could have ever anticipated. Every time I am able to help a student, I remember my purpose – that I’m a part of something bigger. In those moments, I truly realize how much Valpo has become a part of me.

As my senior year soon approaches, I look ahead to graduation and my future in education. The lessons that Valpo has taught me, both inside and outside of the classroom, will stay with me forever. I will always cherish my time here at Valpo and the lifelong community I have been blessed to be a part of. I realized that no matter how close to home a college may be, what truly matters is finding a place where you feel you belong.
