Medical Laboratory Scientist Program Details

Welcome to the Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) Program at Valparaiso University.

Our program is designed to prepare students for successful careers as Medical Laboratory Scientists, combining rigorous academics with practical clinical experience. For a detailed overview of our mission, program goals, and competencies, please refer to the Program Handbook.

Admissions and Enrollment

Admission to the MLS Program requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Additional prerequisites include credit hours in biology, chemistry, and mathematics.

The MLS Program curriculum is designed to meet all NAACLS standards, covering areas including but not limited to: Hematology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Blood Bank and Laboratory Management. The program spans approximately 10 months and includes eight comprehensive modules.

Tuition for the MLS Program is determined in collaboration with employer partners. Students should refer to their tuition agreement for specific details.

Importance: Our Program opened on 1/2023. Not all graduates have registered or taken their board examination. These statistics are a reflection of the students who have taken the board examination as of Dec 2024.

Service work in clinical settings outside academic hours is strictly non-compulsory. Students will not replace regular staff during clinical experiences.

Our program is currently in the final stage of achieving NAACLS Accreditation. We are in Serious Applicant Status and will receive the official Board Accreditation Award in May 2025.

Two days per week are spent in class, and three days per week participants work at partner sites job shadowing,
putting learning into practice, and gaining critical insights into job function and role.
