Ph.D. Religion and Literature – University of Chicago Mueller Hall 134Edward Upton’s research centers on T.S. Eliot’s poetic engagement with sources from ancient India, especially in The Waste Land. His interests include modern poetry, hermeneutics, literary criticism, the history of orientalism, the history of religions, and modern theology. He has lectured on Eliot’s poetry at Oriel College, Oxford University. Upton is working on a book about T.S. Eliot’s encounter with ancient Indian ascetic ideas, especially the concept of Buddhist upaya, in The Waste Land.
He teaches courses on theology and literature including “The Devil and the Problem of Evil,” “Modernism, Mysticism, and the Interpretation of India,” “Religion and Literature of 9/11,” in addition to teaching in the First-Year Program.
