Scholarships Available to Chemistry Students

The chemistry department offers several scholarships for incoming students as well as awards for current chemistry majors.

Chemistry Scholarships for Incoming Students

Please note, this scholarship portion of this award is funded via the Edith Lessor Endowed Scholarship and is therefore only available to female students)

We invite female students to apply for the following scholarship and research award at Valparaiso University. This is an honor that is reserved for the very best admitted students in each incoming class. If you are selected to receive this award, you will receive several benefits:

  • A $1,500 annual scholarship in addition to any other financial aid you receive from the university.
  • A guaranteed opportunity to perform paid undergraduate research under the direct supervision of a Valpo faculty member during your sophomore or junior year at Valpo. You may even be able to get started as early as your freshman year!
  • A guaranteed research poster/presentation at an external conference (e.g., Indiana Academy of Science or American Chemical Society).

The scholarship, research, and conference opportunities will continue for all four years provided that the student attends Valpo as a chemistry or biochemistry major and maintains a 3.0 or above grade point average (based on 4.0 = A).

Chemistry Scholarships for Current Students

To a senior chemistry major with at least a 3.0 overall GPA.

This endowed scholarship seeks to help support female chemistry majors and may be awarded up to four years.

Chemistry major, substantial need, scholastic ability, character, maturity, motivated to undertake summer work each undergrad summer, preference to orphan/one parent deceased.

Awarded to a chemistry major who has proven academic excellence and motivation; need not required

Each year, the chemistry department awards exceptional students in certain courses, subject areas, and class years:

Undergraduate Award for Achievement in BiochemistryGiven for outstanding performance in the two-semester Biochemistry sequence.
Undergraduate Award for Achievement in Physical ChemistryGiven for outstanding performance in the two-semester Physical Chemistry
Undergraduate Award in Analytical ChemistryGiven to a junior who has completed at least one course in Analytical Chemistry to recognize students who display an aptitude for a career in the field.
Undergraduate Award in Inorganic ChemistryGiven to a senior who has demonstrated excellence in Inorganic Chemistry and whose plans include a career in chemistry.
Charles W. Wolf Memorial AwardFor the outstanding chemistry student in pre-medical arts. Given to a junior pre-med chemistry major.
Department of Chemistry Outstanding Leadership and Service AwardGiven to a graduating senior who had demonstrated outstanding leadership in and service to the chemistry department as well as the overall science community at Valpo.
American Institute of Chemists Foundation Baccalaureate Student AwardGiven in recognition of a demonstrated record of leadership ability, character, scholastic achievement, and advancement potential in the chemical professions.
