Formation and Leadership

The Institute for Leadership and Service is the home of Christian Formation and Leadership.

This scholarship is for students who wish to discern how they might best serve the church after college life. For some, this might involve full or part-time work as a pastor, youth worker, church musician, deaconess or deacon. Others might pursue volunteer opportunities as a worship leader, small group leader, church school worker or be involved in other activities. Students from all branches of the Christian family are welcome to apply. The application deadline is January 15. For questions, please email .

Award minimum is $2,500. The amount can increase to a maximum of $5,000 based on leadership in the program. The student must maintain satisfactory academic progress to renew the scholarship

The THEO-399 Symposium meets on Tuesday evenings during the academic semesters. This is a time of fellowship that begins with a shared meal. Following the meal, students have the opportunity to dig into issues of faith, formation, discernment, and leadership through lectures, presentations, and dialogue. The weekly gathering also serves as a space for Allen Scholars to build community with one another.

Every Fall and Spring a retreat takes place off campus. Typically the retreats begin on a Friday night and students return to campus late Saturday afternoon. This is a time for students to take time away to build community, reflect, and grow in their faith. Costs for the retreat are covered so that students can attend for free. Allen Scholars are required to attend a minimum of one retreat a year. Non-Allen Scholar undergraduate students are also welcome to participate.
