What can my advisor do for me?

Valparaiso University is committed to excellence. That same commitment to academic excellence is extended to advising practices. Entering students are assigned an academic advisor to assist them in selecting a curriculum, meeting university requirements, and making the most of their studies.

Your advisor can sign your registration forms, S/U forms, degree application forms, and other various paperwork, but that is not the extent that your advisor can assist you in reaching your goals and getting your degree.

Your advisor is able to help in many ways:

Improve your study habits
Improve your test taking skills
Arrange your schedule for a study abroad
Prepare for the career fair
Link you to campus resources
Direct you to counseling services on campus
Keep on top of deadlines
Add a minor
Provide career resources
Keep you informed of campus activities
Listen

Ultimately, you are responsible for your own education and are expected to read the catalog, know the policies and follow your plan of study, but your advisor will help navigate the way for you.
