Budapest Semesters in Mathematics

Hungary has a long tradition of excellence in mathematics education. Thanks to the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics, North American students can now benefit from this tradition without knowledge of the Hungarian language.

Through this program, mathematics and computer science majors in their junior/senior years may spend a fall, spring, or summer semester in Budapest and study under the tutelage of eminent Hungarian scholar-teachers. The instructors of BSM are members of Eötvös University, the Mathematical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the three institutions known for having educated more than half of Hungary’s highly acclaimed mathematicians. Most instructors have had teaching experience in North America and are familiar with the cultural differences.

  • Living costs are modest.

  • Credits are transferable to North American colleges and universities.

Math in Moscow

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) invites undergraduate mathematics and computer science majors in the United States to apply for a special scholarship to attend a semester in the Math in Moscow program, run by the Independent University of Moscow.

  • Five scholarships in the amount of $7,500 are available per semester.
  • Scholarships are for U.S. undergraduate mathematics or computer science majors.
  • Application deadlines for scholarships: Sept. 30 for spring semesters and April 15 for fall semesters.

Features of the Math in Moscow program:

  • A 15-week-long semester that offers foreign students the chance to spend a semester studying mathematics and computer science in Moscow with internationally recognized research mathematics.
  • Courses are taught in the Russian tradition of teaching mathematics, features of which include small classes, emphasis on in-depth understanding of carefully selected material, and one-on-one interaction with professors.
  • Courses are taught in English.
