Tutoring, Outreach and Service to the Community

The Valparaiso University Department of Mathematics and Statistics maintains a list of students who are interested in tutoring K-12 students in the local community. For a list of these students, and the age groups with which they are most interested in working, contact Mrs. Bridget Murphy: u.

The Valparaiso University Department of Mathematics and Statistics organizes the annual Northwest Indiana Lutheran Middle School Math Contest. Instituted in 1986, this contest held every year in March typically brings together more than 70 students from various Lutheran middle schools throughout Northwest Indiana. The event gives students the opportunity to engage with students from neighboring Lutheran schools and to further their excitement in mathematics.

The Valparaiso University Department of Mathematics and Statistics is proud to be associated with MATHCOUNTS. MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching, and competition program that promotes middle-school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state and territory.

Since 1999, the department has hosted the Northwest Indiana Regional Competition, attracting more than 60 students from eight middle schools. This event, held each February, involves the entire department. Faculty members serve as event coordinator, head grader, scoring judge, and countdown moderator; more than 30 Valpo students assist in the event as greeters, proctors, graders, and data managers.
