First-Year Program

Start Strong at Valpo

At Valpo, first-year engineering students are supported as they explore their interests. Through GE 100: Fundamentals of Engineering, they participate in both experiential learning and a seminar series. In small, collaborative classes, students explore all engineering disciplines through hands-on projects and mini-lectures. The course also features alumni talks and sessions on opportunities like co-ops and study abroad, helping students confidently choose or confirm a major by the end of their first year.

Launch Your Journey

Students are directly admitted into the major of their choice if they know what they want to study. About half the incoming students are unsure of their engineering major and are admitted into the College of Engineering as an undecided engineer. All students have two semester to reaffirm or choose their engineering major and the coursework they take will help them make an informed choice.
