Why Pre-Med at Valpo?

The pre-medical arts program at Valparaiso University is designed to prepare students for admission to medical, osteopathic, dental, or podiatry school. Valpo’s Pre-med graduates go on to successful careers because they receive personal attention from faculty as well as hands-on experience.

The pre-medical arts committee consists of seven faculty from the departments of biology, chemistry, and psychology whose goal is to help guide students in their preparation for professional school. The committee writes all letters of recommendation for health schools.

The Trips of a Lifetime

In the spring of her sophomore year, Katelyn Stermer boarded a plane bound for Central America. She knew that she wanted to become a physician. But her professor, Robert Clark, encouraged her to consider working in underserved clinics in Nicaraqua and Costa Rica.

“I gained great clinical experience, and I learned what it means to practice medicine. You’re not just a doctor but also an emotional guide.” Katelyn says her understanding changed even further the next semester when she traveled to South Africa and Namibia.

“The chemistry department encourages students who may not necessarily want to be a hard-line scientist. Valpo and the faculty here have made me the well-rounded person I want to be academically, spiritually, and emotionally.”

Katelyn was accepted into all five Master of Public Health programs to which she applied, including two Top 10 programs.
